The latest information about the support provided by the municipalities of Latvia to families with children and family-friendly infrastructure is available on website www.vietagimenei.lv. The data has been obtained from the information submitted by municipalities, as well as from the Ministry of Welfare, the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs and the State Treasury.
In order to encourage municipalities to provide data, in 2017 the first ever competition Family-Friendliest Municipality was organised, in which the accomplishments and involvement of municipalities were appraised in two stages. Last year information was provided by 100 municipalities, 55 of which took part in the competition. 989 comments were also sent in by the website visitors, including specific proposals for improving municipal services.
The competition is also taking place in 2018. Unlike last year, this time all 119 of Latvia’s municipalities will be assessed, regardless of the amount of information submitted. From 3 September to 17 October members of the public are invited to express their views and vote via www.vietagimenei.lv.
The Family-Friendly Municipality programme is an initiative launched by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development (VARAM). Its goal is to establish a functioning, clear and simple website for the long-term, on which the general public can study comprehensive information about the diverse opportunities, offers and support for families with children available from municipalities. In June 2018, the initiative received international recognition from the European Large Families Confederation in the form of the main award in the National Government Initiative category for the work done in progressing towards the status of a family-friendly country.
